Host Database

Each NL should keep track of all of the hosts in the department. Information should include user name, system manager, room number, portal number, IP addresses, MAC addresses, and any other fields the NL finds useful. The data for entry in the name server could be generated as a report from a database containing this info.

Many NLs keep this info in a google spreadsheet and generate the csv format from there using macros; as an example, see this in the TECHSUPPORT group's team drive, where IPv6 addresses are generated from the oui and the IPv4 address.

This info is also useful in responding to security issues and inventory problems.
